Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim Hand Dryer (silver) JT-SB216JSH2-S-NE

JT-SB216JSH2-S-NE

Applications: Airport, Bar, Cinema/Theatre, Hotel, Museum, Office, Extreme use (501 to 1000 uses per day)

Now in its 9th generation, with the original being the first “hands in” style hand dryer back in 1992, the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel has all the quality you would expect for a world-renowned manufacturer. The latest model is 2dB quieter than its predecessor, yet gives comparable dry times, due to its unique wave shaped air outlet.  The gen 9 Jet Towel has an anti-bacterial resin on all surfaces not only the hand drying areas. This vandal resistant unit has a strong back panel and a thick, attractive front panel which is very impact resistant. The Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel brings you a blade style hand dryer that is quiet in operation and very energy efficient.  You are guaranteed quality and reliability and probably the longest lifespan available in high traffic locations from a digital brushless motor.  We would recommend this hand dryer is suitable for over 500 uses a day. A 360 degree spin view of this hand dryer is available by clicking here

This version has an Eco mode and a Turbo mode which can add heat or remove heat to the airflow. This gives a rated power of between 0.55kW and 1.24kW with a manufacturer stated dry time of between 9 - 11 seconds in Turbo mode. It is over 50% quieter than most popular blade style units on the Australian market and has the added benefit of an excellent drainage system that prevents wet floors or excess water dripping down the side of the unit. It also has a removable side panel to the drip tank which, in the unlikely event of a blockage, makes it a lot easier to remove the obstruction. It also allows deeper cleaning of this area.

The Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel brings outstanding energy efficiency and longevity to the “hands in” family of hand dryers. If your location is noise sensitive, then this really is a hand dryer for you.

Performance Rating

  • Energy Consumption

This rating is based on the watt hours per dry of the hand dryer which is derived from the rated power and the time taken to dry the hands. We have used the figures based on either the manufacturer’s dry time, if yet to be in house tested or based on the in house testing dry time we have conducted. This will also be based on the most energy efficient setting, if the hand dryer is adjustable for speed and/or heat.

    Watt hours per dry:

    • 0 – 1.99Wh = star rating 5
    • 2 – 2.99Wh = star rating 4.5
    • 3 – 3.99Wh = star rating 4
    • 4 – 4.99Wh = star rating 3.5
    • 5 – 5.99Wh = star rating 3
    • 6 – 6.99Wh = star rating 2.5
    • 7 – 7.99Wh = star rating 2
    • 8 – 8.99Wh = star rating 1.5
    • 9 – 9.99Wh = star rating 1
    • 10Wh and above = star rating 0.5
    4.0 out of 5
  • Quiet Sound Level

This rating is based on the manufacturers stated sound level, usually at 1m. Please see the section titled "how quiet is the." for more information and independent test results, which give a more accurate noise decibel level. These ratings will also be based on the low noise setting, if the hand dryer is adjustable for speed. Therefore at full speed the hand dryer may not be quiet, however it may be adjustable to become quiet if this is required.

    Decibels (dB):

    • Up to 68dB = star rating 5
    • 69 – 70dB = star rating 4.5
    • 71 – 72dB = star rating 4
    • 73 – 74dB = star rating 3.5
    • 75 – 76dB = star rating 3
    • 77 – 78dB = star rating 2.5
    • 79 – 80dB = star rating 2
    • 81 – 82dB = star rating 1.5
    • 83 – 84dB = star rating 1
    4.5 out of 5
  • Life Expectancy

This rating is based on the number of motor life cycles (number of uses) the hand dryer, in theory, will last for. This is based on the motor life expectancy given to us in hours, from the manufacturer.

The number of cycles (uses) has been calculated as follows:

(Number of seconds in the hour / seconds per dry) x motor life hours

For a more individualised longevity calculation based on your own usage numbers please use the life expectancy calculator on each product page.

    Number of motor life cycles:

    • 1,000,000 and over = star rating 5
    • 800,000 – 999,999 = star rating 4.5
    • 600,000 – 799,999 = star rating 4
    • 400,000 – 599,999 = star rating 3.5
    • 200,000 – 399,999 = star rating 3
    • 100,000 – 199,999 = star rating 2.5
    • 80,000 – 99,999 = star rating 2
    • 60,000 – 79,999 = star rating 1.5
    • 40,000 – 59,999 = star rating 1
    • 39,999 and under = star rating 0.5
    5.0 out of 5
  • High Speed

These ratings are based on the in house testing we have conducted regarding dry times. They show realistic comparisons of what to expect from each hand dryer. Please note that the manufacturer stated dry time is not always accurate when compared to the hand dryer being used in realistic conditions. The ratings are based on the hand dryer being placed at its high speed setting if it can be manually adjusted.

    Dry Speed (seconds):

    • 10 – 11 seconds = star rating 5
    • 12 – 13 seconds = star rating 4.5
    • 14 – 15 seconds = star rating 4
    • 16 – 17 seconds = star rating 3.5
    • 18 – 19 seconds = star rating 3
    • 20 – 21 seconds = star rating 2.5
    • 22 – 23 seconds = star rating 2
    • 24 – 25 seconds = star rating 1.5
    • 26 – 27 seconds = star rating 1
    • Over 28 seconds = star rating 0.5
    4.5 out of 5
  • Enhanced Hygiene

Hand dryers are a hygienic method of drying the hands. The better the dry, the less the risk of carrying germs on wet hands. Some hand dryers however have gone that little bit further to enhance the hygienic aspects of the hand dryer. These ratings are based on these extra factors that have been added to aid the hygienic properties. These ratings are based on an added together scoring system where the higher the rating the more enhanced the hygienic properties of the hand dryer. Cold Plasma Clean (CPC) is the most advanced hygienic property on the market and scores a maximum of 5 stars.

    Enhanced Hygienic properties:

    • Cold Plasm Clean Technology = score 5
    • Fast dry (<15secs) = score 0.5
    • Touch Free = score 0.5
    • Heat Sanitation = score 0.5
    • UV-C cleaning = score 0.5
    • HEPA filter = score 1.5
    • Anti Bacterial Coating = score 0.5
    • General filter = score 0.5
    • Ioniser = score 0.5
    3.0 out of 5
  • Vandal Resistance

Some hand dryers would not be suitable for some locations where abuse may be likely such as a train station or night club. However the same hand dryer would be suitable for an office or school location. These ratings are based on an added together scoring system where the higher the rating, the more suitable we would recommend for areas where abuse may be likely.

    Vandal Resistance score

    • Compact size = score 0.5
    • Decreased blockage potential = score 0.5
    • Additional Backplate/ fixings strength = score 1

What’s our expert view and brand comparison of the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim hand dryer? (Buyers guide)

The Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel 'blade' style hand dryer has a lot going for it. The Jet Towel is about 3 to 4 seconds slower than the ultra-fast Dyson Airblade, however it is a comparatively quiet hand dryer, emitting 6 times less noise output at 58db than the Airblade. The Mitsubish hand dryer also has a very effective and easy to service drainage system that makes sure floors stay clean and safe. In addition, the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel hand dryer uses only 45% of the energy that the Dyson Airblade uses, making it cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly. The other advantage of the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel over the Airblade is its accessibility for children and the wheelchair users.

An even lower energy alternative is the D-Flow, however this is a little louder. If your budget doesn't really extend to any of these the JetForce 'blade' and the StealthForce PLUS 'blade' hand dryers may be a good option.

Some of the places this hand dryer has been installed include:

  • Costco Stores (USA)
  • Genesys Environmental UK
  • Siemens UK
  • California Academy of Sciences
  • Shanghai World Financial Centre
  • Mandarin Hotel, Singapore
  • VAE Systems
  • Searcys St Pancras

How suitable is the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim for disabled users?

There are a few points to consider when choosing a hand dryer with disabled users in mind.  These include:

  • Wheelchair access with regard to users being able to position their hands correctly
  • The amount of moisture that will be left on the floor after drying if units are to be used by people physically impaired
  • The noise level of some high speed hand dryers may be too loud for some users, such as users with autism, multiple sclerosis etc.

Disabled areas often double up as baby changing facilities, so considerations include leaving extra space for double buggies, noise levels for children etc.

The Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim hand dryer has the following features that may negate these concerns:

  • Quiet noise levels
  • Water catchment tray to avoid water being dripped on to the floor

The Jet Towel 8th generation eco hand dryer has adjusted its design to make it easy for the Wheelchair bound and small children to use. An additional sensor has been added and the upper front panel has been lowered to allow the user to access and dry effectively by inserting their hands from the side.

Please note blade hand dryers are not the best option for young children or disabled users as hands under type dryers allow great flexibility of movement.

The above manufacturer stated dry time is based on the Turbo setting with heated airflow; they state that their unheated version (eco mode without heat only) has a dry time of around 15 seconds.  The unheated version can be viewed by clicking here. Therefore in eco mode this would be the expected dry time.

Independent testing showed that the Jet Towel in Turbo mode with heat achieved a 94.6% moisture reduction in 15 seconds on average, so slightly slower than the stated manufacturer dry time but still a quick dry nonetheless.

This innovative design produces a large volume of air at speeds of 234 mph whilst generating very little sound in Turbo mode.

How Energy Efficient is the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim?

The energy efficiency of a hand dryer is derived by dividing the rated power by the dry speed. Ultimately what is important is how many watt-hours per dry are used.

For comparison, a standard conventional hand dryer users around 25 – 30Wh per dry.

The above manufacturer rating range is based on their reported dry time of 11 seconds in Turbo mode with heat added to the airflow and the reported dry time of 15 seconds based on their unheated version (eco mode without heat only) which can be seen by clicking here.  As you will see this shows a very energy efficient dry time when compared to a standard conventional hand dryer.

The independent testing above was conducted with the hand dryer in Turbo mode with heat added to the airflow.  As you will see, the independent testing Watts per dry is increased compared to the manufacturer rating.  This is due to the tests concluding that the dry time of the Jet Towel on maximum settings is around 15 seconds.

What is the life expectancy of the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim?

So how long will this dryer last?

Hand dryers can have 2 types of motor which are:

  • A digital brushless motor
  • A universal brush motor

In theory, universal brush motors do not last as long as digital brushless motors and require the brushes to be changed periodically. They also vary in their lifespan. Digital motors however do cost more to repair should they fail at any point.  There are variations in the lifespans of both universal brushed motors and digital motors.

The best way to choose what is right for you is to look at your facility and the amount of use each hand dryer is expected to get. This way it can be determined if a brushed motor hand dryer would be most suitable for you or whether investing in a digital brushless motor would be more cost effective.

How quiet is the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim?

Manufacturers typically measure sound levels in terms of decibels dB(A) @ a 1 metre distance in a sound proof chamber. This measurement does not take into account the increase in noise when hands are positioned under/in the dryer or when the sound bounces off walls. Where possible we supply manufacturer's stated dB(A), and 2 independent tests which are more reflective of 'real conditions’.

Manufacturer stated

56 – 59 dB(A)

Hands under in an anechoic chamber (sound proof)

75 dB(A)

Hands under in a normal room*

79.8 dB(A)

*represents maximum “real life” volume

Equivalent Examples:
Normal Conversation                      50 - 70dB(A)
Vacuum Cleaner                             70dB(A)
Busy Traffic / Alarm clock               80dB(A)
Lawn Mower / Chainsaw                 90dB(A)
*various internet sources

Please click here to read our guide to help understand what the perceived decibel level above would be equivalent to.

The JetTowel has received the “Quiet Mark” status accolade.

As can be seen, the manufacturer stated noise level makes this hand dryer one of the quietest on the market, even at Turbo setting.  As can be seen from the independent testing however, even in a sound proof chamber there is a considerable rise than the promoted values.  When the hands are placed inside the hand dryer this again increases the noise level further.  That said this is still quieter than other well-known brands on the market and not the loudest out there, for sure.

It is worth noting that each 10dbA rise in noise equates to a doubling in sound levels.

It is worth noting that if your noise concern relates to the noise carrying into different areas of the building then pitch will be just as relevant as sound output (loudness). Higher frequency pitches will not travel through walls as easily as low frequency pitches for example. Please contact usdirectly to discuss your specific need.

What extra hygiene aspects does the Mitsubishi Electric Jet Towel Slim have?

Washing hands correctly is the best way to ensure high levels of hand hygiene.  Making sure hands are completely dry is the next important aspect of hand hygiene.

Most modern hand dryers have standard hygienic properties such as fast dry times and touch free sensors to activate. However for added peace of mind some models have enhanced hygienic properties.

The extra hygiene aspects this hand dryer has are:

  • Fast dry time (based on manufacturers stated dry time)
  • Touch free sensors
  • Made from anti-microbial material
  • Has an anti-microbial filter fitted (not HEPA)

The Jet Towel also has a removable side panel to the drip tank which, in the unlikely event of a blockage, makes it a lot easier to remove the obstruction.  It also allows deeper cleaning of this area.

Does it actually do what the manufacturer states? Independent testing information

At Intelligent Hand Dryers UK, our ethos is to bring you as much open, honest and reliable information as possible so you can make the most suitable and informed purchase.

We endeavour to include independently obtained results and in house testing, as well as manufacturer's specifications. This gives a true reflection of dry time performance, noise and energy efficiency of each hand dryer.

Noise level testing was conducted at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and a leading independent testing facility.

We also provide in house video testing to demonstrate dry performance. This gives a visual demonstration in “real use” as opposed to using methodical scientific protocols.  The approximate dry time using this method was set when no spots of water could be seen on a paper towel after drying the hands.  This is over and above what is required to be classed as a “hygienic dry” which requires 95% of the hands to be dry after using the dryer.
